Re-naming Harvards Lowell House?

lowell house

The current faculty deans of Lowell House are David Laibson and Nina Zipser.[2] Lowell's sister college at Yale University is Pierson College. Lowell House’s historic commitment to fostering creativity guided the design of seven music practice rooms, including space for opera and bell-ringing practice, an art studio, and a new “makerspace” featuring a 3D printer, computer stations, hand tools, and building supplies. The latter space was designed with faculty, staff, and students from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to enable seamless, high-powered connections for students taking classes in Allston and Cambridge. Architecture firm Kieran Timberlake designed new common spaces, reconfigured residential areas, and transformed the two basement levels from utility and storage spaces into areas for student use, all with a focus on sustainability and accessibility.

Thursday Teas

No matter the time of day or weather, it is truly a beautiful and serene part of Lowell to look at (especially when you have the Bell Tower as your view from your dorm window). Also, every Sunday in the early afternoon, students are able to go up to the bell tower and ring the bells as much as their heart desires. The Lowell House Opera  is the longest continually-running opera company in New England. Lowell High Tables, and the pick-up playing of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture in the courtyard, were institutionalized in the first decade of Lowell House's life and continue to this day. It can certainly be said that few students ever fail to attend the famous Thursday Tea in the Faculty Deans' residence. Decades of alumni/ae continue to return on Thursdays out of habit, and knowing they can always meet at Tea.

However, despite what you have heard before or what you may hear in the future, Lowell House is truly the best house and I will show you that through some of my favorite parts of Lowell. This space is not reservable except for special events, House formals, or campus events. There is a  minimum 3 week lead time to apply; personal approval from the House Administrator is necessary. Paper forms to apply to reserve the Dining Hall are available at the House Office, not online. Members of the Lowell House Society of Russian Bell Ringers perform their Sunday ritual of sounding the bells in Lowell House tower at 1 p.m.

The faculty deans prompt a discussion.

Lowell House residents relax and socialize at a weekly tea in the masters’ residence. Elsewhere in the House, the team reused existing resources, including salvaged elm from the trees on-site to make benches, pine from student rooms for paneling on the lower level, and brass doorknobs from old doors for coat hooks outside the fitness area, dance studio, and squash/basketball court. One of the central elements of the project was the establishment of Otto Hall, named in recognition of a gift from Alexander Otto ’90, M.B.A. ’94. It is the section of Lowell House that faces Mount Auburn Street and includes a new, accessible primary entry point that connects to a new main lobby and the larger of Lowell’s two extensive courtyards.

The project will break ground immediately after Commencement with plans to complete construction by fall 2019. The renewed Lowell will house 414 students, including 26 who had previously lived in overflow housing. Jankowski noted that the improvements made to the House’s social spaces provide valuable party spaces outside the confines of the final clubs. A large open area spreads out next to the student kitchen, which can be re-arranged and closed off for large parties. The bells are consecrated, and are of great significance to the Russian Orthodox Church, in the liturgy of which bells play an important role.

Upperclassmen suites house up to ten people, however, so fear not if you wish to live a more chaotic lifestyle. Beyond the living space, the Lowell renovation will enhance many unique House customs. The Senior Common Room, with its working fireplace and courtyard view, will be a new gathering place for faculty, tutors, and staff. The spirited arts culture of Lowell will get an upgrade with a new suite of music rooms, a band room, an art room, and an opera practice room.

At Harvard, the Law School withdrew its shield, adapted in the 1930s, which was based on the crest of the family of Isaac Royall Jr., an eighteenth-century sugar-plantation owner whose fortune endowed a professorship and helped establish the school. Harvard does not discriminate against applicants or students on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry or any other protected classification. Lowell Library is a great place for students to work when they need to focus in a calm, quiet setting.

Generally, this space will not be reservable for the general student public. The beloved, wood-paneled study space is located on the second floor of Otto Hall (D/E entries). It is a space for all Lowellians to come and study peacefully in the wood-panelled quiet. It is not reservable, it is for Lowell residents, and it is considered a no talking/food zone.

Two Victorian homes nestled between Harvard and Porter squares comprise the Dudley Co-op. Founded in 1958, the Co-op offers an alternative to on-campus living with its “progressive, participatory community.” The structures, one on Massachusetts Avenue and the other on Sacramento Street, mingle well in the Cambridge community. On Friday, Housing Day, first-year students will find out which House they will live in for the rest of their time at Harvard. Alex Hassan, who was part of the Lowell renewal team before graduating last spring, hopes the plan resonates equally among past, present, and future students.

It is often described as the first steel frame house in the United States, and also an early example of the use of gunite (sprayed-on concrete). Neutra was familiar with steel construction due to his earlier work with the Chicago firm Holabird & Roche. Neutra served as the contractor for the project in order to manage the cost and quality. Lowell House was built on a knoll where the first settlers of Cambridge had planned to build their fort. From the neo-Georgian to the Brutalist, each has its own flourishes and charm that make these Houses home.

Four new elevators were installed across the House, including one leading to the Tower Room just below Lowell’s iconic Russian Bells, which ring out every Sunday. House traditions include Masters' Tea on Thursday afternoons, a May Day Waltz at dawn on the Weeks Footbridge, high table,[1] and the annual Lowell House Opera mounted in the dining hall. Springtime brings the Bacchanalia Formal, often with a live swing band in the courtyard. Mather House, a 19-story high-rise built in 1970, was designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott, the oldest architectural firm in Boston and the one that designed all of Harvard’s River Houses. Kirkland is the only River House with a twin-chimneyed gable connected by a horizontal parapet bridge.

For parties with booze, you'll need to fill out the Tower Room Party Form and meet with the Resident Dean. We have four music practice rooms available in the underground near the mail room. Musician and former artist-in-residence Livingston Taylor (right) plants a kiss on the cheek of Maurice Pechet, who has been a loyal member and benefactor of Lowell House Senior Common Room since 1948, the year be began as the Allston Burr Senior Tutor. The newly renovated Lowell House made its much-anticipated debut last week after two years of work that blended its historic character and love of tradition with a commitment to meet the needs of a new generation of students.

These parties are equal parts grand and ~spicy~, and Zhang sums it up as Lowell being “sassy, bougie, and nasty,”, like a certain TikTok anthem. Other new amenities include seven music practice rooms of varied sizes and the “Makerspace,” a workshop designed so engineering students can work within the comfort of their House. It features high-speed computers, a 3-D printer, and drones, along with the more traditional hot-glue guns and wrench sets.

The organization of Quincy House around a courtyard, however, follows traditional Harvard guidelines. His aim was for undergraduates to develop wider circles of friends and for House administrators and tutors to support student needs; each House was designed with a dining hall, library, and senior and junior common rooms for study, meetings, and collaboration. The project, which reimagines the neo-Georgian building for the needs of its 21st-century community of students, tutors, and faculty, is expected to take two years. The multifaceted project will preserve the tradition-rich House, which counts novelist John Updike, actors Natalie Portman and Matt Damon, and former Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter among its alumni, while upgrading spaces to better support advising students, and to allow for more amenities and better accessibility.

Faculty Deans Nina Zipser, dean for faculty affairs and planning, and David Laibson, Robert I. Godman Professor of Economics, moved into their new residence this summer after officially starting their terms on July 1. Lowell House, Inc, a non-profit 501(c)(3), has been providing high-quality, accessible, and affordable addiction service and related support to the Greater Lowell community since 1971. Our programs cover a broad range of inpatient and outpatient treatment and living options that support recovery across a lifetime. Successive layers of low retaining walls followed the contours of the steeply sloping site.
